Curriculum
The Diocesan curriculum guidelines, consistent with the State of Texas guidelines, are followed for the teaching of all secular subject areas at Our Lady of the Valley School.

The Common Core State Standards are used and followed at the school. The standards are designed to be relevant, reflecting the knowledge and skills that the students need for success and to be fully prepared for the future. The standards are designed to provide clear educational standards for kindergarten through 8th grade in English language arts and mathematics.

The standards ensure that parents, teachers, and students have a clear understanding of the expectations in reading, writing, speaking and listening, language and mathematics.

Our Lady of the Valley School offers students opportunities for growth in the following major subjects: Religion, Language Arts & Reading, Mathematics, Physical Education, Social Studies, Science, Handwriting, Fine Arts, and Computer Literacy

• Students in grades 1st-8th take the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills Achievement in September. This state standardized test is used to measure if a student has mastered the basic skills at his/her grade level.

Religion
Our Lady of the Valley School demonstrates a commitment to the values and philosophy of a Catholic education. We reflect and teach Catholic values and morals which prepares students to live fully as children of God. Students study Catholic doctrine and tradition, Bible study, Social Justice, preparation for the reception of the Sacraments of Reconciliation, and the Eucharist.

Liturgical services (Mass) are held on Fridays for the entire school community unless a Holy Day falls during the week. Prayer Services on the feast of St. Francis and other special times are held for the community. Blessing of animals is also a special event for the community as well as All Saints and All Souls are celebrated in November 1st and 2nd. The Crowning of Mary is an event held in May.

Students in Grades 5 through 8 will take the ACRE (Assessment of Catechesis of Religious Education) Test in alternating years in January. The ACRE test helps the school, parish, and diocesan leaders evaluate the faith knowledge and attitudes of students in Catholic schools.
